Green Deal Bulletin March 2012 – special edition

On the 8th March The Secretary of State announced that DECC would be investing £3m to train 'go-early' Green Deal assessors and to address pressing skills shortages in the insulation sector.

Estimates suggest as many as 65,000 jobs could be created by the Green Deal, with up to 54,000 of these being for installers.

£1m will be invested in training around 1,000 'go-early' Green Deal assessors, mainly from those already qualified as Domestic Energy Assessors.

£2m will be invested by DECC and a further £0.5m by Construction Skills, bringing the total to £2.5m to train installers. This funding will focus on one of the key sectors – solid wall insulation – where industry and government analysis has highlighted particular challenges if the sector is to significantly ramp up its capacity. The funds will provide both training of trainers and around 1,000 trainees.

Longer term, DECC is working closely with the sector skills councils, employers and BIS to develop new Apprenticeship schemes to support the demand likely to be generated by the Green Deal.

DECC is planning an event in May where Greg Barker will be announcing in more detail how this money will be spent. The event will also promote opportunities for trainees and companies interested in working under the Green Deal.
